On June 3rd in Zlatni
Piasasti resort near Varna city the annual FIS (International Ski
Federation) 2015 Calendar Conference was held. FIS holds its
organization conventions and conferences on a yearly basis and this year
it selected Bulgaria to host between June 3rd and 6th this high ranking
forum which will gather the world ski elite for the first time in our
FIS president and World Olympic Committee member Gian-Franco Kasper, Marc Girardelli - five times World ski cup winner, Phil Mahre - three times World ski cup winner, Steve Podborski and Ken Read of the Crazy Canucks (a team of Canadian skiers known for their extreme downhill skiing) came especially for the event. For Girardelli and Phil Mahre this is not the first visit to Bulgaria as both ski stars have competed in Borovets.
The five stars International Hotel Casino&Tower Suites will host for the event the entire FIS Executive Committee. Together with them the conference will be attended by some 700 delegates from 80 countries, among them: presidents of different ski federations and the brightest stars in ski sport. The large number of guests from all over the world ranks the forum among the best attended FIS Calendar Conference to the moment and this is a fact Bulgaria is proud of. Besides the world ski elite Bulgaria will host some of the leading sports reporters and guests from all over the world.
The official opening of this highly prestigious for the country event was honored by Krasen Kralev - Bulgaria's Minister of Youth and Sports, Ivan Portnih- Mayor of Varna city, Tseko Minev- President of Bulgaria's Ski Federation, Peter Popangelov- the most successful Bulgarian skier in alpine ski, Vladimir Filipov - executive director of hosting International Hotel Casino&Tower Suites.
FIS president Gian-Franco Kasper welcomed the guests to the event and assured to be extremely happy to see so many familiar faces from Bulgaria, among them Peter Popangelov. "It is clear that Bulgaria is a very attractive destination for events like this one - this year we set a record in the attendance number with more than 700 registered participants to the conference in the International Hotel. Bulgaria's Ski Association is a very special member of the International Ski Federation and is among its first member states. I wish to thank the Minister of Sports for his great interest in the development of winter sports, Kasper added.
In his welcome speech Minister Kralev said: "I have the honor to welcome the world ski elite here in my native Varna city! We have done great efforts to bring young people to the ski slopes and towards the development of summer and winter tourism in general in all resorts. I truly hope that after your stay in Zlatni piasatsi you will become embassadors of Bulgaria's hospitality worldwide.
We are proud to be the hosts of this event together with FIS (International Ski Federation), BT Collection and hotel International. Don't forget to enjoy the beautiful landscape and the beaches of Zlatni piasatsi, Mr.Tseko Minev added.
Hosting the FIS Calendar Conference is a great honor for our country. The event is one of the most important forums of the Ski Federation and the first of such a large scale to be held in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was awarded the right to organize it last summer at the Barcelona FIS Congress and International Hotel Casino&Tower Suites - part of BT Collection, was selected to be the most suitable for this important event after an inspection was carried out in August 2014 by Sarah Louis- FIS Secretary General. According to Mrs. Louis among the undisputed advantages of the hotel is its conference center giving the possibility to hold sessions in ten halls simultaneously which, combined to the quality of services and the readiness at every level of hotel International to meet the FIS Calendar Conference are essential for successfully holding a forum of such scale.
Together with FIS Council at the Calendar Conference will also sit the alpine ski, snowboard, ski running, ski jump, medias and doping committees. The calendar for 2015/2016 season will also be approved. In their free time the participants will have the opportunity to taste Bulgarian cuisine, watch Bulgarian folklore and visit some of the landmarks in the region.
